Matches in the TOTO KNVB Cup with amateur clubs may continue despite the tightened corona measures. The Women’s Eredivisie, on the other hand, must be shut down, the KNVB was told on Wednesday after consultation with the Ministry of VWS.
On Tuesday, Prime Minister Mark Rutte announced during a press conference that the competitions in the Eredivisie and Kitchen Champion Division may continue, albeit without an audience.
Because the competitions at the amateur clubs will be stopped for at least four weeks as a result of the corona measures, the question arose as to what the consequences would be for the KNVB cup. The duels in the first round of the main tournament are scheduled for October 26, 27 and 28. Many amateur teams are active in this.
Since the authorities have now labeled cup matches as professional football leagues, the tournament can be completed as usual. In order to accommodate the amateur clubs, which are not allowed to complete group training sessions in the coming period, games of amateur teams have been postponed to December 1 and 2. Duels between professional football clubs will remain on the original date.
No exception for Women’s Eredivisie
While the KNVB hoped that an exception to the corona measures would also apply to the Women’s Eredivisie, this does not appear to be the case. The KNVB accepts that decision, but says it finds it disappointing.
“That is why we will continue to fight for the position of top women’s football and we will continue to discuss this with the ministry in the coming weeks”, says Jan Dirk van der Zee on behalf of the KNVB management.
Despite the suspension of the competition, the Orange Women are allowed to continue playing international matches. The Dutch national team and the Dutch Juniors can also continue to train and play international matches. Duels in the Champions League and Europa League will also continue.
