KLM no longer transports passengers to Shanghai due to cleaning requirement

Shanghai wants all planes landing in the city to be thoroughly cleaned. As a result, it takes more than five hours before a plane can take off again. KLM, which operates one flight a week to the city, says the requirement “makes the planning of our network extremely complicated”.

The strict rules in Shanghai went into effect last week. The US airline Delta Air Lines even had a flight return when the company learned of the cleaning rules. That plane had taken off in Seattle, but turned back. The US government is in talks with China about the rules.

Flying to China is not very interesting for most travelers anyway. China sets strict rules for anyone entering the country such as long quarantines. The country strives to keep corona out.
