Jakarta – Kim Jong Un has inaugurated the third year of construction of the apartment project at a groundbreaking event in the Hwasong area, north of the capital Pyongyang on Friday (23/2/2024). Uniquely, there was an explosion in the middle of the groundbreaking process.
This groundbreaking procession was attended directly by President Kim Jong Un and was enlivened by a large explosion behind the crowd of workers and people watching. The explosion soared black in color. Not only that, there were also fireworks that appeared like small sparks on the right and left outside the rows of workers and people present.

In other countries, the groundbreaking process is carried out by shoveling the land that will be used as a construction site. North Korea actually activated explosions and fireworks at the project construction site.
The workers attending the ceremony, which according to NK News consisted of thousands, wore colorful project hats. They even brought propaganda boards supporting the construction of the apartments.
North Korea had said that Songhwa Street in southeast Pyongyang was the location for the construction of 10,000 houses in 2021, but it was finally moved to Hwasong in 2022. The apartment project in the Hwasong area, North Korea was restarted in 2022 and will end in 2025 with a target number of houses realized as many as 50,000 houses. In this third development, North Korea will build 10,000 housing units on an area of 90 hectares.
“A unique group of residential houses and public buildings including educational, public health, commercial and public service facilities in the third phase of the project in the Hwasong area. Making the capital Pyongyang more beautiful as the area will become a modern administrative district,” said Prime Minister Kim’s Cabinet Tok Hun as quoted from NK News on Tuesday (27/2/2024).
Currently, around 30,000 houses have been built using concrete pillars and concrete iron, the walls themselves are made of handmade concrete bricks whose shape is inconsistent and smoothed with mortar.
Even though the construction of the 50,000 house project has been underway since 2022, according to NK News which has seen North Korean state media broadcasts, Songhwa Street and Hwasong Street, which are the construction sites, do not yet appear busy. Even though the 50,000 houses are provided by the government to the people free of charge.
