Two people have been killed in a failed robbery at Chile’s national airport. According to the Chilean authorities, the robbers targeted a passenger plane from Miami that had a large amount of money on board.
The plane of the South American airline Latam had arrived in the Chilean capital Santiago with more than $ 32 million on board. The amount in cash would be transferred to an armored truck belonging to a security company after landing.
Firefight
Before then, about ten robbers managed to get close to the landed plane with three cars after they had tied up a security guard.
A firefight ensued near the plane, Deputy Interior Minister Monsalve said at a press conference. An airport employee and one of the robbers were killed. The other suspects fled without taking any money.
According to Monsalve, the robbery was very well planned and the robbers were heavily armed. The passengers of the plane would not have been in danger. The device would have been damaged.

Robberies are more common at Santiago airport. In 2020, gunmen looted more than $14 million when they successfully stormed a cash truck in the cargo area of the airport.
Six years earlier, criminals got hold of $10 million in a similar robbery. They were eventually arrested, but most of the money had disappeared.
