Kerala Rubber Farmers Disappointed with Minimal Increase in Support Price; Demand Rs 300 instead

Thiruvananthapuram – Disappointment for the rubber farmers who were anxiously waiting for the support price of rubber to cross 200. There is only a nominal increase of Rs 10 in the budget. With this, the current support price of Rs 170 will increase to Rs 180. At the same time, MLA Mons Joseph, who was present in the House, asked what is the point of adding only Rs.10. The finance minister replied that the support price of rubber is being increased to Rs 180 despite financial constraints.

The finance minister also raised the claim that Kerala is the only government that is intervening to solve the problems faced by rubber farmers. The finance minister explained that he requested the help of the central government to increase the support price of rubber to 250 rupees, but they have not listened yet, and in this situation, he is increasing it by 10 rupees amid financial constraints.

Under the auspices of Kerala Rubber Limited, it is intended to set up a rubber industrial complex at a cost of Rs. 9 crores is earmarked for Rubber Ltd. to promote value added industries in the rubber sector.

“Kerala is the only government that intervenes to solve the problems faced by rubber farmers. The Center is taking a stand to protect the big rubber industrialists by increasing imports. This is clear from the judgment passed by the Competition Commission against the tire companies. At present Kerala is giving a support price of Rs 170 per rubber. The help of the central government has been requested to raise it to Rs 250, but it has not been listened to yet. In this situation, despite financial constraints, the support price of rubber is increased to Rs 180.’ – Finance Minister said.

The Finance Minister’s announcement was accepted by the members of the ruling party. However, opposition members immediately raised questions against the nominal increase of Rs 10. With the Lok Sabha elections around the corner, the Rs 10 increase comes at a time when the politics of rubber in the budget will be crucial for the Kerala Congress, which is part of the Left Front. The opposition had issued an urgent motion notice last day demanding that the support price of rubber be increased to Rs.300.
