Katalin Novak’s Visit to Ukraine: Overcoming Orban’s Kremlin-Friendly Rhetoric and Improving Bilateral Relations

She recently met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. It is noted that in this way she is trying to overcome the Kremlin-friendly rhetoric of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

Novak said she held meaningful talks with Zelensky on the sidelines of the International Crimean Platform Summit in Kyiv. Zelensky, in turn, said he was grateful for the visit and would work with Novak to improve bilateral relations.

Relations between Hungary and Ukraine

Bloomberg writes that Hungary is increasingly isolated in the European Union due to Orban’s attempts to undermine Western sanctions against Russia.

He tried to block EU aid, refused to supply weapons to Ukraine and repeatedly stated that “the counteroffensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is doomed to failure.”

The head of the administration of the Hungarian Prime Minister, Gergely Gulyash, said that the foreign policy of Hungary is determined by the government, not the president.

What did the President of Hungary say?

Novak, who is the Supreme Commander of the Hungarian Armed Forces, took part in the International Summit of the Crimean Platform.

She said she agreed on a five-point plan, including Hungary joining the “peace formula” that requires Russia to withdraw its troops from all over Ukraine.

Novak also said that they would work on a document to reset bilateral relations and strengthen the rights of ethnic Hungarians in Ukraine.

Hungary’s position on the war

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban is openly pro-Russian. He often makes statements to discredit Ukraine.

It should be noted that since the beginning of a full-scale war, Hungary has not provided Ukraine with military assistance, and is also blocking EU sanctions against Russia. In addition, Budapest continues to trade with Russia, and representatives of the Hungarian authorities visit Moscow.

Recently, Katalin Novak visited the Transcarpathian region, met with the leadership of the OVA, the regional council, Berehove and the district.
