Karakachanov: The Bulgarians who died in Côte d’Ivoire are not mercenaries for hostilities

The former Minister of Defense described yesterday’s live briefing of the Ministry of Defense on the MiG-29 disaster in Shabla as a circus

It is not news that Bulgarian ex-servicemen train pilots in several African countries, Côte d’Ivoire is one of the countries. As far as I know, they are hired by a private company to train local African pilots. The official announcement is what you have seen Former Defense Minister Krassimir Karakachanov commented on BNT the crash of a Mi-24 military helicopter in Côte d’Ivoire on September 10, 2021, in which three Bulgarian citizens died.

“In principle, when it comes to training, they have no right and the contract itself does not stipulate that they will take part or take part in hostilities. And I honestly do not believe that they took part in hostilities, most likely they performed some transport task, “Karakachanov added.

According to him, this is completely legal.

“When you have a contract with a licensed company under the control of the relevant government, another question is how much under control, to what extent the armies serving in such companies comply with the Geneva Convention? Most likely they are the scapegoat when the big atoms are kicked,” he said. the former Minister of Defense.

In the specific case of the Bulgarian pilots, according to him, this was not the case because they were not mercenaries who went to shoot or do any work, and usually their contracts were for training.

He reminded that since the beginning of the 90s many Bulgarians have served, and probably still are in the French Foreign Legion.

“All kinds of citizens from all over the world serve there, some with a criminal past, some in search of adventure. There are certainly Bulgarians who serve in these few companies that the Americans used in Iraq, in Afghanistan for sure,” Karakachanov added.

According to him, private armies have not replaced the state, but the world has become more cautious and uses private armies.

“When a state army, backed by a national flag and a government, carries out certain activities that are subject to a tribunal or the Hague Convention, etc., is one and would be a cause for war if a state allows itself to formally uses its national army in another country, and because the world has become cautious, private armies are being used, which is a public secret. They are not exactly mercenaries in the sense we know them, they are just companies that recruit people with military training. or with the necessary qualities to acquire one. They do not officially lead an army, but in practice they do, “Karakachanov said.

According to him, war is the natural state of humanity and only in the last hundred years have attempts been made to make peace prevail, ie. periods of peace to prevail over periods of war.

Krassimir Karakachanov commented on yesterday’s press conference for the reasons that led to the tragic accident with the MiG-29 in Shabla, in which Lieutenant Colonel Terziev died.

“What clever man invented this circus yesterday?” This is humiliating. To beat up a few generals, the chief of defense, an admiral, and let them be interrogated. And to broadcast all this online – what do you want to show? “Karakachanov asked.

According to him, the woman has the right to seek justice, but this does not give anyone the right to subject officers to such humiliation, because the relevant authorities conduct an inspection – military police, military prosecutor’s office.

According to him, no resignations should be submitted.
