Kämna manages the big coup: victory on the first alpine stage

Lennard Kämna won the 16th stage of the Tour de France. The Bora-hansgrohe professional prevailed as a soloist on the first Alpine stage.

Overjoyed, Lennard Kämna spread his arms, patted himself on the chest and shook his head in disbelief. After an unbelievable solo ride in the Alps, the huge talent has finally reached the goal of his dreams. The 24-year-old won his first stage win in the Tour de France on Tuesday after a clever attack 20 kilometers from the finish. Kämna triumphed on the 16th section from La Tour-du-Pin to Villard-de-Lans ahead of Giro d’Italia champion Richard Carapaz and on his umpteenth attempt achieved the first German stage win since John Degenkolb two years ago in Roubaix.

Kämna: “That means a lot to me”

“I still can’t believe it. It’s a wonderful day for me, just great. It means a lot to me,” said Kämna and added: “It’s a great relief. We had so many setbacks. I’m up All in on the last hilltop. I knew that nobody would catch me on the descent. ”

This time Kämna was no longer tricked after he had been sprinted over four days earlier at Puy Mary by the clever Colombian Daniel Martinez. On the penultimate climb, Kämna made the decisive attack. Then he played out his time trial skills and drove away from the climbing specialist from Ecuador with ease.

Tour victory? – Kämna: “It would be foolish to say that”

Perhaps the star of Kämna has really risen in the winter sports resort. The experts have a lot of confidence in the former junior world champion, possibly even the tour victory at some point. “Whether I’ll ever get there personally is in the stars. You can never say I’ll be good enough to win the tour: It would be stupid to say that. Not everyone can do that,” said the youngster .

The coup on Tuesday was a victory with an announcement, the North German had already chosen this 16th stage on the rest day. “Every time in a breakaway group, there are new experiences. It’s always a game of poker. I have the feeling that I’ll get better at it,” said Kämna, who achieved the 92nd German stage success on the tour. It was also a great relief for his Bora-hansgrohe team after the disappointments of the past few days.

Favorites save strength for the queen stage

The favorites, on the other hand, allowed themselves another day of rest before the day of truth. More than ten minutes behind, the stars rolled over the finish line around yellow bearer Primoz Roglic and his compatriot Tadej Pogacar. Conserving strength was the order of the day before the queen’s stage on Wednesday up to the 2304-meter-high Col de la Loze. Defending champion Egan Bernal once again lost touch with the favorites – possibly also out of calculation. That increases the Colombian’s chances of a stage win in the next few days.

Nothing stands in the way of an exciting finale. All 785 controls for the virus performed around the second day of rest were negative. This means that all 22 teams can continue their journey to Paris. No further tests are planned until the final stage on Sunday. “It couldn’t be better. The concept works very well. I’m satisfied that no one tested positive,” said Kämna.

Tour boss Christian Prudhomme was also back in the tour organisation’s red number one car after a week of quarantine. The 59-year-old tested negative for the virus after receiving an abnormal result on the first day of rest.

Geschke is a strong fifth

Shortly after Prudhomme waved the starting flag, the attacks started. A large breakaway group quickly formed, in which Kämna and teammate Daniel Oss were represented. Simon Geschke later joined the group. The Berliner had the last German success on a mountain tour stage in Pra-Loup in 2015.

The “queen’s stage” of this year’s Tour de France will take place on Wednesday. There are only two mountains on the program, but they are tough and all two belong to the “Hors Categorie”: First you go over the 2000 meter high Col de la Madelaine, then you have to climb the Col de la Loze The stage destination in Meribel awaits at an altitude of 2304 meters. The Col de la Loze does not – yet – have a sonorous name, but the data is tough: 21.5 kilometers ascent with an average gradient of 7.8 percent. But especially on the last four kilometers, slopes of over 20 percent await the driver!
