ACCEPTED, KOMPAS.TV – The Taliban insurgent group entered the capital Kabul on Sunday (15/8/2021), and demanded full control of Afghanistan. Meanwhile, Western-backed President Ashraf Ghani has left Afghanistan.

Launch The Straits Times as of Monday (16/8/2021), there will be no transitional government following the Taliban’s seizure of power across Afghanistan. This was revealed by two officials of the Taliban Islamist group.

According to two senior Taliban commanders, Taliban insurgents have entered the presidential palace and taken power.

The Afghan government did not confirm this because President Ashraf Ghani had fled the country on Sunday (15/8/2021). The purpose of Ghani’s escape remains unclear.

A senior official at the Afghan Interior Ministry mentioned Tajikistan, while the Foreign Ministry office said the location of Ghani’s refugees was unknown. The Taliban themselves are tracking Ghani’s whereabouts.

A number of local social media users called Ghani a coward for leaving the Afghan people in chaos.

Many Afghans fear the return of the Taliban, given that in the past, the Islamist insurgent group implemented harsh sharia law. During the 1996-2001 Taliban occupation, women were not allowed to work and punishments such as stoning, flogging and hanging were imposed.

However, the Taliban has now stated that it will impose more moderate rules. The Taliban has promised to respect women’s rights and protect both foreigners and Afghans.
