The opening of the borders is near. Germany, France and Austria should be freely accessible again on June 15 (BLICK reported). But according to Justice Minister Karin Keller-Sutter (FDP, 56), it would be better to think twice about spending a vacation in other European countries.
–
“You have to be aware that an exuberant summer vacation will probably not be possible, even if certain limits open up,” says the Federal Councilor in one Interview with the “Neue Zürcher Zeitung”. And: “If you want to be on the safe side, you should spend your holidays in Switzerland.”
–
Reason for caution: “The corona-related restrictions naturally also apply in the neighboring countries.”

Italy remains a special case
For the holidays in Italy, Keller-Sutter does not give the green light at first. “I assume that the southern borders will remain closed in the near future”. Ticino, which is severely affected by the coronavirus, also demands that “the border remains open only to rush hour traffic”.
–
The Italians obviously have a similar view: From the Italian side, there is no wish to open the borders, the Federal Councilor confirmed in an interview.
–
But Keller-Sutter doesn’t believe in a second corona wave. “I also trust your own responsibility when traveling, and I’m not afraid of a second wave.” However, there remains a residual risk.

Tourists bring money to Switzerland
Tourism is an important source of income not only for other European countries, but also for Switzerland. “German tourists were responsible for 10 percent of overnight stays in Switzerland last year,” says Keller-Sutter. With the opening of the border and increasing normalization, “tourism with neighboring countries is likely to start again”.

It remains to be seen whether foreign politicians will give their citizens the same advice as Keller-Sutter, preferring to stay at home for the holidays.
