Worries about Ruth Bader Ginsburg (87). The oldest Supreme Court judge in the United States, also known as the Supreme Court, was taken to hospital with an infection. Ginsburg is being treated at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, for acute cholecystitis, a benign inflammation of the gallbladder.

Ginsburg is an icon of justice in the United States. She has survived four cancers. On Monday, after a hearing, a gallstone was discovered in her, which is causing the inflammation. She is probably the best-known judge on the Supreme Court. The petite woman is known for her keen reasoning and as a pioneer for women’s rights. Her life and work is the subject of several films and books.

The liberals in particular celebrate the 87-year-old. However, it is a thorn in the side of the conservatives. Due to her age, her state of health is being closely monitored: her withdrawal from the court or even death could give Trump and his Republicans another seat in the highest US court.

That is why the Supreme Court is so important
In the United States, the nine-member Supreme Court often has the final say in disputes over groundbreaking laws and orders. His decisions, which are often made by a narrow majority, are often of national importance and shape the interpretation of laws in lower courts over years, sometimes even decades. The judges are appointed by the U.S. President and must be confirmed by the Senate.

Donald Trump shaped the Supreme Court enormously in his three-year term. He was able to install two conservatives, Neil Gorsuch (52) and Brett Kavanaugh (55), and has put the US Supreme Court on the right course for years. Especially the appointment of Kavanaugh caused a sensation. In the fall of 2018, he faced rape allegations during his Senate confirmation process. A few hot weeks and an FBI investigation later, however, he was elected to the Supreme Court by the Republican-dominated Senate.

Ginsburg does not want to resign
However, it is unlikely that Ginsburg will hand over her position on her own will. She has made it clear in the past that she “does not want to retire” by a long way. “I will stick with it as long as I can go full throttle,” said Ginsburg in an interview in 2018.

So it was not surprising that she took part in a video conference survey on Wednesday, the day after she was admitted. From the hospital bed, Ginsburg joined the Supreme Court and dealt with a hearing about the “Obamacare” health insurance introduced under ex-US President Barack Obama.

By late Wednesday evening (local time) Ginsburg was already better. According to a spokeswoman for the Supreme Court, she was able to leave the hospital. (nim / SDA)
