Justice archives investigation against Bolsonaro on anticovid vaccines

A magistrate of the Brazilian Supreme Court decided to file this Friday an investigation against President Jair Bolsonaro for alleged prevarication in the negotiations of an Indian vaccine against covid-19.

Judge Rosa Weber thus responded to a request from the Attorney General’s Office, which said it had found no evidence against Bolsonaro, who had been denounced in relation to that case by a Senate commission that investigated the government’s erratic management of the pandemic.

The Prosecutor’s Office relied on a report from the Federal Police, which ruled out filing charges against the leader of the extreme right on this matter, which referred to a negotiation with local representatives of the Indian laboratory Bharat Biotech for the possible purchase of the Covaxin vaccine.

The parliamentary commission concluded that Bolsonaro had been informed by a deputy of alleged irregularities in these negotiations and had not alerted the police authorities to them.

The Police acknowledged that there are “indications” that the president was informed, but even so, they established that, according to the laws, he had no obligation to report the case.

The negotiations were in progress when the alleged irregularities were denounced by the Senate commission, but once revealed, the Government canceled the negotiations, which was also contemplated by the Attorney General’s Office to maintain that there was no crime.

The commission presented nine accusations against the president and members of his government for the management of the health crisis that, to date, has caused more than 662,000 deaths and 30 million cases in Brazil, which maintains it as one of the countries hardest hit by the pandemic, behind the United States and India.

The most serious, which refers to “crimes against humanity”, has not yet been analyzed by the Attorney General’s Office.
