Jürgen Klopp replies to a letter from ten-year-olds

Jürgen Klopp has been training Liverpool FC for years, and with great success. This pleases the fans – but less so the fans of other Premier League clubs. A ten-year-old Manchester United fan wrote a letter to Klopp asking the 52-year-old to lose games in the future.

What started as a homework now got a lot of attention. Also because Klopp is not only a master of football, but also of good staging. The coach replied Daragh Curley from County Donegal, Ireland, with a personal message that has since become public.

“Liverpool are winning too many games,” Daragh wrote in the letter, quoting the BBC among others. “If you win nine more games, you’ll have the best series of unbeaten games in English football.” As a Manchester United fan, it was very sad for him.

In the next game, Klopp should therefore ensure that Liverpool loses: “You should just let the other teams score,” writes the boy, and: “I hope I have convinced you never to win the league or another game again . “

Despite – or perhaps because of – this somewhat presumptuous demand, the news apparently sparked Klopp’s interest. Daragh’s father Gordon Curley said the football coach’s response overwhelmed him.

Unfortunately, he could not comply with Daragh’s request, wrote Klopp: “As much as you wish Liverpool to lose, it is my job to ensure that Liverpool wins.” There are millions of people in the world who want exactly that – and he doesn’t want to let them down.

But Klopp also had a few encouraging words ready for Daragh. Liverpool have lost games in the past and will continue to do so in the future – “that’s football”. Manchester United could count itself lucky to have a fan like Daragh. “I hope if we are lucky enough to win more games and trophies that you are not too disappointed, because even if our clubs are competitors, we have great respect for each other.”

Gordon Curley was impressed by Klopp’s answer. The letter confirms the impression that Klopp is a “decent guy”. Writing won’t change one thing either: Daragh and Gordon Curley remain Manchester United fans.
