Juan Pablo Varillas beat Roberto Bautista, one of the great favorites of the Gstaad tournament | Tennis | RMMD | SPORTS

Juan Pablo Varillas achieved the best victory of his career. The Peruvian put an end this Thursday to the walk of the Spanish Roberto Bautista in the Gstaad tournament (Switzerland), by winning 7-6 (3) and 7-5, in the resumption of a match that was suspended on Wednesday after having suffered several rain postponements.

Until the definitive suspension last Wednesday, the first racket of Peru dominated by 7-6 (3) and 6-5, having this Thursday to start taken out Bautista Agut, third favorite, to at least force a decisive thirteenth game.

But Bautista gave up his serve against a Varillas who took advantage of his first match point to get into the quarterfinals where he will face the Austrian Dominic Thiem, who also beat the Argentine Federico Delbonis in a postponement match, 7-6 (6) and 6-3, in one hour and 57 minutes.

Thiem, in his fight to return to the top of the world rankings, from where he is currently far away (n.274), suffered in the first round, which decided on his side in the decisive thirteenth game. Much easier was the second set, which he decided with two service breaks (third and ninth games).

The match between the Peruvian and the Austrian will be this Friday, July 22.

Who is Dominic Thiem?

The 28-year-old tennis player, Varillas’ next rival, has had an outstanding career on the professional tennis circuit. In his prime, the Austrian native was in the top 10 with Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal. In fact, until March 2, 2020, he was ranked 3rd in the ATP ranking (currently number 274).

Throughout his career, Thiem won a total of 17 Professional Tennis Players Association titles. Without a doubt, the most outstanding was the one achieved in 2020, when he beat Rafael Nadal in the grand final of the US Open, one of the Grand Slams of the season. He was also a finalist in Australia (2020) and Roland Garros (2018 and 2019).

The wrist injury forced Thiem to stop the activity. “I am a player who always needs a bit of time after a break. Even after preseason, I need a few games to get my anticipation and footwork back. I was away for a year. I also didn’t have more than one game a week, so it was impossible to improve. It was a bad time, but I’m happy to be moving forward.”he said a few days ago to the ATP page.
