Journalists’ Union Condemns Attacks on Media at FC Porto Event: Third Incident in Two Weeks

The Journalists’ Union (SJ) repudiated this Tuesday the attacks on journalists, with lighters, that occurred during the presentation of Pinto da Costa’s re-candidacy for the presidency of FC Porto, late Sunday afternoon, at the Coliseu.

This is the “third case of intimidation, nationally, in two weeks”, which is why the SJ called for those responsible to be punished.

Let’s rewind. In the final stretch of the dragons’ president’s speech, when he criticized the “Lisbon” media, as well as the general press based in Porto, tempers flared, the jeers rose and lighters were thrown from the audience.

«There are also reports that water bottles and other objects were also thrown at media professionals», describes the SJ, which regrets the attitude of the FC Porto president, considering it «absolutely disrespectful and unacceptable».

The union reiterates that aggression against journalists is a public crime and must be investigated. It also alerts the authorities to an «apparent climate of impunity in Portuguese football, but not only that, with three attacks on journalists in the space of two weeks».

Appeal to common sense and education

In turn, the CNID – Association of Sports Journalists demands respect for the candidates for the presidency of FCPorto, understanding that the incident was not a mere “chance”.

«It was following the speech and attacks on the media by Pinto da Costa. The CNID requests the best attention to the need to properly protect journalists, reserving for them, for example, places where they can do their work in conditions and safety”, reads the statement published this Tuesday.

Therefore, the association calls for «restraint by candidates and their associates in relation to journalists», so that the events can take place «within the limits of common sense and good education».

It is worth remembering that on January 23, a journalist from Zerozero was intimidated by members of Benfica’s technical team, after the futsal League Cup final. Two days later, a Porto Canal team was attacked during a report, outside a shoe factory, in São João da Madeira.
