Joseph Zadroga, 9/11 Advocacy Leader and Father of Detective Zadroga, Dies in Tragic Accident

Joseph Zadroga, a New Jersey man who became a strong advocate for the families of 9/11 first responders after the death of his son, an NYPD detective, also tragically died when he was run over by an elderly man in the parking lot of a hospital.

Zadroga, 76, of Little Egg Harbor, NJ, was the father of Det. James Zadroga, who died in 2006 of a respiratory illness which his family said was related to the time he spent working at Ground Zero.

In his honor the “James Zadroga 9/11 Compensation and Health Act” which provides federal health benefits to first responders who have become ill or may experience health complications after the 2001 terrorist attacks.

His father was run over Saturday afternoon in the parking lot of a hospital in Galloway Township. Apparently he had been standing next to his car when another 82 year old driver who was trying to park near him accelerated and hit him with his SUV, pinning him underneath, according to a police statement. posted on Facebook.

Zadroga was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police said they were investigating the accident. No immediate charges were announced, he said. Fox News.

News of Zadroga’s death quickly resonated with post-9/11 survivors and activists.. “To the 9/11 community. We just found out that Joe Zadroga passed away. “Joe was the father of NYPS Detective James Zadroga, the hero for whom our legislation is named,” wrote John Feal, another prominent advocate, also on Facebook. “We will not speculate, we will wait for all the details. We send our condolences and mourn with the Zadroga family.”

On September 11, 2001, almost 3,000 people died in the attacks in New York, Washington DC and Pennsylvania, in the worst terrorist attack in US history. Only 60% of the fatalities from that day have been identified. And several more have died or reported illnesses in subsequent years as a result of the events.

The collapse of the World Trade Center (WTC) sent a thick dust cloud over Lower Manhattan and fires broke out for weeks. Thousands of construction workers, police officers, firefighters, volunteers and others spent time working in the soot, often without adequate respiratory protection.
