Jos Verstappen: “It was spoken to put Max in Toro Rosso”

Max Verstappen has not been able to test in the RB16 at Silverstone, but according to father Jos that will not play tricks on him. The 22-year-old Limburger expects to be back in rhythm pretty soon. That is why they have also rejected a test with an old Toro Rosso.

In less than a week, the very first race weekend of the 2020 season will open in Austria. People will kick off at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg. Max will have to do this without his father, because he cannot be present due to the corona measures. Jos expects that his son will immediately be competitive in the Alpine country. “We think we will be there, but you don’t know exactly how quickly, but we certainly think we can participate in the front in Austria,” says the former Formula 1 driver in conversation with the Formula 1 Café of Ziggo Sport.

According to Verstappen senior, it remains to be seen whether the top teams are indeed as close together as expected. “But if it comes together a bit, which we do expect, it will be (the title fight) between Lewis and Max,” he says. Red Bull will travel to Austria with quite a few updates. The new parts were already tested this week at Silverstone, when Alexander Albon was behind the wheel. Jos is optimistic about the upgrades: “I think there have been jumps. That is why many teams have also tested for a day. Then you can do some things on the car and you can see if it works or not.”

However, Max has not been able to drive a meter with the modified RB16. Also at Silverstone he was unable to get behind the wheel due to the quarantine rules that apply to a visit to Britain. Red Bull has still thought about a test in an old Toro Rosso in another country, but Verstappen did not like that. “It has been talked about to do it with a Toro Rosso, but that is yet another car. And Max indicates that he is back up to speed within four or five laps,” said Jos.
