Jokowi Congratulates South Korean President-elect Yoon Suk-yeol

Yoon, 60, is the candidate for the main opposition People Power Party. He beat Lee Jae-myung of the ruling Democratic Party with 48.6 percent of the vote. The Democratic Party is Moon Jae-in’s party, and Lee only gets 47.8 percent.

Yoon Suk-yeol said he would respect the constitution and parliament and work with opposition parties to restore polarized politics. He also promised to promote unity. Yoon calls the election a victory for the greats. “Our competition is over for now,” he said in a victory speech.

Yoon Suk-yeol thanked and comforted Lee who was his rival in South Korean presidential election. “We must join hands, unite for the people and the country.”

On the other hand, Yoon Suk-yeol’s victory turned a remarkable turn of events for conservatives, who were struggling after the slump caused by the overthrow of President Park Geun-hye in 2017. Yoon is a new politician who previously served as Attorney General. Yoon Suk-yeol rose to prominence after spearheading an investigation into the corruption scandal that hit Moon Jae-In’s maid.
