Government studies changes in anticovid vaccination schemes

The National Government is evaluating endorsing heterologous vaccination schemes in the first two anticovid doses. This would allow, for example, that if someone applied a dose of Sinovacyou could complete your schema with one of Modern.

Currently, the guidelines of the Ministry of Health provide that heterologous regimens can only be implemented once the booster doses are applied. This means that the initial schedules (the first two doses) must be with the same brand of vaccine, but the booster can be of a different brand.

“It is a modification that we are discussing to enable these initial schemes to also be heterologous,” the director of Medicines and Technologies of the Department told EL COLOMBIANO. Ministry of HealthLeonardo Arregocés.

One of the vaccination goals set by the National Government is that people who only have one dose of the vaccine, apply the second as soon as possible. According to the most recent reports from the Ministry of Health, this is the situation of at least 7.4 million citizens in the national territory.

But, what if it’s been more than 12 weeks after the first dose was given? Arregocés explained that in any case people can go to complete their scheme. “Every applied dose counts. It doesn’t matter if it’s been 21 days, 12 weeks, six months or a year. That first dose counts,” the official said. This implies that people who missed the recommended application time do not need to restart their vaccination schedule; they can continue with the second dose and, after at least four months, inject the booster dose.

“The evidence is showing us that this heterologous vaccination it works well, it is valid and it does not have additional risks”, pointed out Arregocés.
