The Public Prosecution Service is demanding a seven-year prison sentence against rapper Joey AK for kidnapping, threats and assault. He and eight others are suspected of kidnapping another rapper from Amsterdam, Kobus L. The suspects are said to have forced L. into a van and then taken him away. Along the way they allegedly robbed him, assaulted him and threatened him with a firearm.

Prison sentences of between four and six years have been demanded against the eight other suspects, all between 22 and 34 years old. They all belong to the rap formation Zone 6.

Joey AK is popular in the Holendrecht district in Amsterdam-Zuidoost. He is no longer allowed to go there after a previous conviction. In 2020, he also had to serve three years in prison for violently kidnapping a woman and her two children. Hot water was thrown on the woman’s neck. In 2022 he was released with an ankle bracelet, on the condition that he would not appear in Amsterdam-Zuidoost, Amsterdam-West and Amsterdam-Noord.

Yet, according to the Public Prosecution Service, he still has a lot of influence in Holendrecht. “The suspects are usurping a neighborhood and setting a bad example for the youth. Violence is glorified and committed to glorify the status of the members of Zone 6,” the prosecutor said.

She pointed to a clip in which Joey AK refers to the neighborhood and the expensive items that people who support him will receive. “It is clear that if you work for the suspect – that is, commit criminal offenses – you also receive a reward for it,” the prosecutor said.
