Jochem van Gelder Searches for Chatters of the Past: The Return of Praatjesmakers?

Jochem van Gelder (60) is looking for Chatters of the past. The television maker posted a message on social media this week to find Brian, the boy who told about the end of his sister’s hamster about fifteen years ago.

“He had bitten it to death because he wanted a rat himself,” explains Van Gelder. Between 2000 and 2010, the presenter made more than a hundred episodes of Praatjesmakers, the legendary program in which children (between 4 and 7 years old) were central. Their fearless stories are still on the retina of many viewers.

You were wondering how they are doing?
,,Beats. Later I also made Alles Kids, a family program for SBS 6. One of those episodes contained the video of Wilco and the lie detector. That went viral at the time with 12 million views. I understood that he wasn’t doing very well, so I went looking for him. We got in touch and he also wanted to interview me. Then we made an item together. That was also well looked after. He’s fine now. After that I thought: there are more children who have left an indelible impression in one way or another and about whom I honestly wonder: how would they be doing now? Like now with Brian. That item caused quite a stir, because he explained in detail how he had bitten the hamster to death and then removed the hairs from his mouth.”

Have you contacted him yet?
“Yes, he responded after fifteen minutes. He was not far from me, always nice. I saw a profile picture of him with two cats. So an animal lover. We have made an appointment.”

The videos are now for your own social media channels, but don’t the items lend themselves nicely to a new series? Time for a return of the program with new and old participants?
,,Well, you are not the first to suggest that, but that is not up to me, although I am convinced that the program would score again. Children today are at least as articulate as they were fifteen years ago, I think even more articulate.”

How do you envision that?
You could discuss current affairs with them. Those from their world and from the great human world. That was not possible before. Then there was half a year between recording and broadcasting. You could now review the week on a Friday. Plus a section with the children from the past: how are they doing? Then you have a beautiful, pure and honest program without too many bells and whistles.”

The pilot of the theater show has been completed and it was heartbreaking to see what children come up with

Have you already polled broadcaster KRO-NCRV?
,,Actually already a while ago. People reacted remarkably enthusiastically there, but the NPO must of course also be. I do think there is a need for such a program because we no longer hear the voice of the child. What do they experience? What do they think of the world? The conversations with children can be funny, confrontational, but also so enlightening. I am convinced that the program can score, provided you devote as much time and attention to the screening of the junior guests as ever. After all, the children formed the basis of the success.”

You work a lot for Omroep Gelderland, but you are also working on another project with older children, did I understand?
,,For Omroep Gelderland I make Van Gelders gray, a kind of Talkers but with the elderly, and Focus op Gelderland, a program with unknown photographers. Now my colleague Rob Bons is working on an interactive theater show to activate primary school students to make the world a little better. The pilot has been completed and it was heartbreaking to see what kids come up with. That they tell on stage about their home situation, about parents who are arguing, but also about mess at school or bullying.”
