On the morning of January 4, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga held the first press conference of the New Year in Tokyo. He said that in view of the spread of the new crown pneumonia epidemic, the Japanese government is studying and declaring a state of emergency for key areas again.

Yoshihide Suga said that the number of people infected with the new crown pneumonia in Japan has exceeded 3,000 per day, and the number of severely ill patients is hovering at a high level. The situation is very serious. The government will strengthen its countermeasures, focusing on four key tasks: preventing the spread of infection, preventing overseas imports, strengthening the medical system, and starting vaccination as soon as possible.

In terms of infectious disease countermeasures, Suga Yoshihide said that since December last year, evening dining activities in Tokyo and surrounding counties have not decreased. The experience since last year shows that most people with unknown infection channels are infected while eating. Therefore, it is very important to shorten the business hours of the catering industry and control the risk of infection. He requested that the closing time of restaurants in Tokyo and surrounding Kanagawa, Saitama, and Chiba prefectures be advanced to 20 o’clock. In order to effectively reduce the risk of food and beverage infections, the Japanese government has begun to study the declaration of a state of emergency in key areas and will refine the restrictions on the state of emergency. At the same time, in order to increase policy enforcement, the government will amend the Law on Special Measures for Infectious Diseases as soon as possible to clarify the subsidies for related companies and the punishment standards for companies that refuse to cooperate with the government.

In addition, the Japanese government will also take measures to prevent the import of overseas epidemics. On the basis of strict entry restrictions, for countries that have opened a green channel for business, if a mutant virus is confirmed in the other country, the green channel will be stopped immediately.

Yoshihide Suga also said that the travel promotion activities that were originally scheduled to be suspended until the 11th of this month will continue to extend the suspension period.

Statistics show that the epidemic in Japan has continued to spread since late November last year. On December 31 last year, there were 4,520 new infections nationwide. Among them, the number of people infected in Tokyo reached 1,337, and the number of people infected in neighboring Kanagawa, Saitama, and Chiba prefectures all set the highest record. As of January 2 this year, the number of people infected nationwide has exceeded 3,000 for five consecutive days. On January 3, Tokyo newly infected 816 people, including 101 severely ill patients, reaching the highest peak since the first wave of the epidemic in April last year. In the past week, the average daily death toll in the country has exceeded 60, more than twice the number of the first wave of the epidemic. The epidemic has led to a shortage of medical resources. Some positive patients were forced to wait for hospital beds at home. Other chronically ill patients even delayed normal outpatient and surgical treatment due to the epidemic.
