Japanese Prime Minister Hit by Smoke Bomb During Speech in Wakayama

Japanese Prime Minister (PM) Fumio Kishida was hit by a smoke bomb by a man while giving a speech in Wakayama, Saturday, April 15 2023. He was successfully evacuated without the slightest injury.

The Japanese police managed to catch the culprit. The arrest was made not long after the explosion occurred at the location. The following is a chronology of events.

Japanese Prime Minister (PM) Fumio Kishida made a speech at Saikazaki Port, Wakayama, Saturday (15/4/2023) local time. Then, an object suspected of being a smoke bomb appeared near the Japanese PM who was giving a speech.

Reported by Reuters and AFP, Saturday (15/4/2023), the object triggered an explosion at the port complex that Kishida was visiting. Despite this, the explosion did not hit Kishida.

Video footage shown on local television showed disturbances in the crowd that had gathered at the site of Kishida’s speech. Then, an explosion sound was heard followed by white smoke.

According to a report by NHK, Kishida was just starting his speech when the explosion occurred. The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) said Kishida’s speech was scheduled to be delivered at 11.40 local time.

Fumio Kishida’s Evacuation Process

Reported by AFP, Saturday (15/4/2023), Japanese PM Fumio Kishida was successfully evacuated in a smoke bomb explosion incident that occurred while he was visiting and giving a speech at Saikazaki Port, Wakayama Prefecture, Saturday (15/4) afternoon local time. The explosion missed Kishida and he was evacuated unharmed.

It is known that Kishida visited the port to support his party’s candidate in regional elections. After being evacuated from the port of Saikazaki, Kishida is known to have continued his campaigning activities in the area.
