Jake Gyllenhaal takes on Conor McGregor in a remake of an ’80s action classic

On Thursday, the first trailer was released for one of the iconic action films of the 80s – at least on the B level – Road House, translated into a disco on the Highway in 1989, in which the character of Patrick Swayze’s mysterious bouncer is played by Jake Gyllenhaal, who is looking great even at the age of 43. Gyllenhaal plays a retired (and, of course, downed) cage fighter who starts working as a bouncer in a Florida bar that some bad guys want to ruin. The film debuts on the Amazon Prime streaming service on March 21.

Gyllenhaal learned to wrestle quite well for the 2015 boxing movie Southpaw, and now he has rounded out his boxing skills with kicks and throws into an MMA repertoire. The film’s cage fighting scenes were shot at the world’s leading MMA organization, the Ultimate Fighting Championship, in Las Vegas in March; between the lead-up bouts and primetime, the crew had roughly six minutes to film Gyllenhaal’s choreographed fight against ex-UFC’s Jay Hieron.

The main villain who wants to destroy the bar is played by Conor McGregor, who has put on 15-20 kilos of muscle for his competition weight; this is the first film role of the Irish MMA superstar, whose career has been frozen for years after shameful scandals, ugly defeats and an even uglier broken leg.
