Jacinda Ardern rebuts Trump’s criticism of COVID-19 outbreak in New Zealand

The Prime Minister of New Zealand, Jacinda Ardern, praised worldwide for her management against COVID-19, on Tuesday refuted the criticism made by US President Donald Trump for the re-outbreak of the virus in the city of Auckland, the most populous city in the world. country.

The North American president quoted the news about the oceanic country yesterday, which has added more than 60 local infections since last week and after exceeding 100 days without detecting the virus in the country, and compared it with the United States.

“They beat him, he was on the front page (…) but the problem is that (now) there is a huge increase in New Zealand and you know, that’s terrible. We don’t want that,” the US president said to a crowd. in Mankato, Minnesota.

The New Zealand prime minister responded today to her counterpart during a press conference, noting that Trump is “clearly wrong” when he says that New Zealand has “a large increase” in cases of the new coronavirus.

“Obviously I don’t think there is a point of comparison between the current outbreak in New Zealand and the tens of thousands of daily cases in the United States,” Ardern replied.

New Zealand has been fighting since last week against an outbreak of COVID-19 in the city of Auckland, the most populous in the country and whose 1.7 million inhabitants are confined until August 26, the vast majority linked to positives in four members of the same family and that already reaches more than 60 cases.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, the oceanic country has accumulated 1,293 confirmed patients with COVID-19, including 22 deaths, in contrast to the 5.44 million cases in the United States, including some 170,000 deaths.

This Tuesday New Zealand reported an increase of 13 cases -12 linked to the aforementioned family and 1 to a maintenance worker in a quarantine center-, while the United States reported about 42,000 infections the day before.

The president stressed that New Zealand is “one of the countries with the best performance in the world when it comes to COVID-19.”

The Ardern government in March subjected all its inhabitants to one of the strictest confinements in the world when it registered fifty cases, which allowed it to return to normality last June, although with the outbreak it has reconfigured Auckland and imposed social restrictions in the rest of the country.
