Jaap van Zweden is considering refusing permission to broadcast Beethoven opera | NOW

Jaap van Zweden might consider not giving permission for the television registration of the opera to be broadcast Fidelio by Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) when the sound in an empty Concertgebouw does not please him during the recording, the conductor tells on Thursday in Faithful.

“The musicians are so far apart, and the choir members are also far apart”, the conductor explains why he is concerned about the sound and acoustics in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw during a corona-proof arrangement by the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, the Great Broadcaster Choir and soloists. “You have to work very hard to get a consonance; you want to avoid hearing individual voices.”

His consideration not to give permission for a television broadcast of the opera, motivates Van Sweden by saying that the recordings “would go into the eternal archive”. “Do you need to precede it with a disclaimer? Like: This recording was made in corona times in an empty Concertgebouw”.

Van Sweden said last summer that he heard the Concertgebouworkest in a corona setup in the main hall of the Concertgebouw. “That was not easy. I was shocked how different it sounded, less homogeneous.” The 59-year-old conductor therefore says that he subsequently thanked him for a conducting assignment with the Concertgebouw Orchestra.

Fidelio van Beethoven, performed by the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, the Groot Omroepkoor and soloists, conducted by Jaap van Zweden, can be heard on Saturday from 2.15 pm in the NTR Saturday Matinee on NPO Radio 4. A television registration is scheduled on NPO2 on Sunday from 7.10 pm.
