It’s not Putin, it’s Alexei Miller who made European gas go crazy

Jakarta, CNBC IndonesiaRussian President Vladimir Putin often accused of being a figure that raises world gas prices. This happened when the country he led was sanctioned by Western countries after attacking Ukraine.

Even so, the assumption of Putin’s role in increasing global gas prices is not entirely true. Directly, the policy regarding the flow of gas supply to the White Bear Country is controlled by the CEO of the energy company Gazprom, Alexei Miller.

In this energy crisis, Miller said his side would play by the rules set by Moscow. It is known that the Putin administration is currently asking European countries, which depend 40% of their gas needs from Moscow, to pay for gas in rubles due to economic sanctions that have isolated Russia from foreign exchange.

“Our product, our rules. We don’t play by rules we didn’t make,” Miller said during a panel discussion at the Saint Petersburg International Economic Forum in Russia’s second city.

Miller himself joined the state-owned company in 2002. This Russian-German director joined Gazprom with a background as an economist. He holds a PhD in economics at the Leningrad Institute of Finance and Economics.

In terms of wealth, people who are also close to Putin are also included in the ranks of Russian billionaires. Media ABTC said his wealth penetrated US $ 2.5 billion or equivalent to Rp. 37 trillion.

Miller is also one of the highest paid executives in Russia. He is said to have earned a salary of US$ 27 million or nearly Rp 400 billion from the company.

As a close person to Putin, Miller has also become one of the most influential figures in Moscow. Magazine Forbes even crowned Miller as the world’s most influential human being ranked 54th in 2015.

Meanwhile, as long as Putin’s rule is in effect, Gazprom has cut off its gas supply to several countries in Europe. One of them is Poland and Bulgaria for refusing to pay in rubles.
