“It’s not fair to die like this”

It was that sense of duty that brought her there, to Sunday morning, where a man was waiting to shoot her to death, along with two other women, during a condominium meeting in Rome. Nicoletta was my friend. She is survived by her husband Giovanni and a splendid ten-year-old son, Lorenzo With yours, other families, to whom I express all my closeness, have been destroyed”. The premier, Giorgia Meloni, entrusted social media with the memory of one of the victims of this morning’s shooting in Rome, near a bar in via Monte Giberto, in the Nuovo Salario district.

“The man who killed these three innocent women, and injured three other people, has been arrested and I hope justice will take its course as soon as possible. The shooting range from which he had stolen the gun (the firearms license had been refused) is under seizure. Yet the word “justice” can never be compared to this story. Because it is not right to die like this”, adds Meloni.

“Nicoletta was happy, and beautiful, in the red dress she bought for her fiftieth birthday party a few weeks ago. For me, she will always be beautiful and happy like this. To God Nico. I love you”, he concludes.

The fight, the shootings, the arrest

The man who opened fire was identified as the 57-year-old Claudio Campiti. He would have obtained the weapon in a shooting range, leaving without returning it.

In the detention decree, the prosecutor of Rome Giovanni Musarò indicates the danger of escape. The suspect, in fact, had his passport with him at the time of the shooting and clothes and 6,000 euros in cash in a backpack.

After the shooting Four people ended up in the hospital: two women and a man injured by gunfire and another man who was taken ill. The two women wounded by gunshots were transported by the 118 doctors respectively to the Sant’Andrea hospital and to the Umberto Primo general hospital.

The first was wounded in the skull and is in very serious condition, the other was instead wounded in the chest. A man, wounded in the face, was instead transported in red code to the Agostino Gemelli polyclinic. The fourth man, suffering from heart disease and suffering from illness, was instead transported to the Sandro Pertini hospital in code red.

Campiti remained silent after being taken to the barracks of the Nucleo Radiomobile in Rome, awaiting the decree of detention. The three victims, according to what is learned, would have been hit at chest height by shots fired with a Glock 45 semi-automatic pistol taken away shortly before from the Tor di Quinto shooting range. An action performed with coldness and precision, of those who know weapons. The pistol, after having fired 4-5 rounds, would have jammed. At that moment one of those present would have succeeded in blocking Campiti and then handing him over to the soldiers of the Arma. In total there were about thirty consortium members in the gazebo.

Campiti’s life had been marked, in 2012, by death of her fourteen-year-old sonRomano, who with a sled had crashed into a tree on a slope of the Croda Rossa di Sesto. Claudio Campiti had since led a battle for the safety of the ski slopes. The license to carry weapons had been denied to him precisely in the light of the information in the Arma’s possession on the continuous disputes with the condominiums.

“I’ll kill you all”

According to the testimony of one of the participants, Campiti entered, closed the door and said: ‘I’ll kill you all’, and then started shooting”. “I got under a table and went out on all fours – she says -. I don’t know if the gun jammed, but I’m still in shock,” a woman present at the meeting told AGI.

“The man was known by all, he was a consortium member and in the past he had made verbal threats to all of us,” he continued. The attacker was then stopped by the police. “He fired on the consortium’s board of directors – added the witness -. The weapon jammed at one point and was blocked by some associates who also unlocked the door. I saved myself because I got under the table and managed to get out of the room on all fours,” the woman said.

“Dead and Wounded Everywhere”

“I heard the shots and, like everyone else, I threw myself on the ground. Then I got up and saw that they had immobilized him: there were dead and wounded everywhere”, said another consortium member present at the meeting.

“He had objectified the management structure of the Consortium, the members of the board of directors, then in the bedlam, the area was also small, even some consortium members got involved”, added another member of the consortium.

“He didn’t want to pay the bills”

The dispute would have arisen from old contrasts among the condominiums. Today a meeting was held to discuss some aspects relating to the management of the housing of a building consortium in the Nuovo Salario district. The bar room had been rented for the joint meeting.

The disagreement had resulted in cross-complaints both by the consortium members against Claudio Campiti and by the 57-year-old against them, the AGI learns from qualified sources. Campiti also had a blog in which he talked about his conflicting relationship with the structure of Lake Turano. “We had presented several complaints. He did not want to pay the costs of the Consortium”, some consortium members said today. “This summer we had a volleyball camp and he even threatened the boys because he felt annoyed,” they added.

The Killer’s Blog: “Welcome to Hell”

The allegations against the consortium members had been listed in a blog opened by Campiti himself. “Welcome to hell, here with the penal code the state goes to the toilet, reporting is a waste of time, I know all thieves”, wrote Campiti in a post dated November 2, 2021. The site contains references to alleged “mafias” and passages such as: “They are keeping me without public lighting, you know in the dark you can see less and you can shoot in peace”.

“The episode of violence that upsets our city is very serious. Three lives lost and seriously injured in a shooting during a condominium meeting. I am in contact with the Prefect and tomorrow I will participate in the Committee for order and safety. My closeness to families,” he wrote on Twitter the mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri.
