ITB Astronomy Expert Wins Award from Royal Astronomical Society

NEWS Happiness came from one of the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) astronomers, Premana W. Premadi. He won a prestigious award from the Royal Astronomical Society (RAS) 2023 in the form of an Honorary Fellowship.

This woman with a doctorate who is now the Director of the Bosscha Observatory in Lembang, West Bandung Regency, received an award for her leadership in the development of astronomy in Indonesia.

Not only that, the work of Dr. Premana is considered to have played an important role in promoting astronomy as an educational tool.

“Congratulations to Ms. Nana, we are very proud of this achievement. This award is also a gift for the Bosscha Observatory’s Century,” wrote the Bosscha Observatory in an Instagram upload, quoted on Tuesday (24/1/2023).

According to information from the Royal Astronomical Society, Premana or familiarly called Bu Nana, has developed an astronomy curriculum at the Bandung Institute of Technology. He also led the Indonesian Astronomy Association from 2001-2010.

The announcement was made at the Ordinary Meeting of the Society which was held on Friday 13 January 2023. RAS gave many awards to astronomers and geophysicists, one of the figures who had won the award gold medal termasuk Albert Einstein, Edwin Hubble, Arthur Eddington dan Stephen Hawking.

Dr.’s latest work Premana’s major in astronomy is a combination of astronomy education and STEM training, with a focus on clean energy and renewable energy sources, as well as water management systems in remote areas of Timor. For these projects, the Indonesian government has funded the construction of a new observatory in Kupang.

Dr. Premadi has been heavily involved in the development of astronomy in Indonesia, running the Universe Awareness for Children (UNAWE) Indonesia project, being part of the international UNAWE project which aims to introduce basic knowledge of astronomy to children aged 4-10 years. He works extensively with colleagues in the UK on projects supported by the UK Newton Fund. (Imanha/West Java)
