Italy’s FA wants to introduce “Liquidity Index” for Serie A clubs

The Italian football association FIGC wants to introduce a new criterion for admitting Serie A clubs to the top division from the new season. Accordingly, a so-called “liquidity index” should apply for the start in Series A.

Only clubs that have certain liquid funds should be able to play in Serie A, said association boss Gabriele Gravina in an interview with “Radio anch’io” on Monday.

Other parameters that are to be evaluated in the future are the level of debt and the relationship between income and personnel costs of the clubs.

“This will allow us to get the clubs’ operating costs under control. In the future, we want to take into account competitiveness, but also rules that ensure perspective and sustainability for the football system,” emphasized Gravina.

The association president is working on a new format for broadcasting Serie A games. The distribution of the games over several days of the week and at different kick-off times had a negative impact on the ratings. A solution had to be found, said the head of the association.

From February 26, the capacity utilization of the Italian stadiums will increase from 50 to 75 percent. According to Gravina, it could even rise to 100 percent in early March. “That would be a big step forward,” Gravina said.
