“I’ve heard monkey sounds,” says Nico Williams

Madrid. Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams said this Saturday that he received racist insults from “silly people” in the league match against Atlético de Madrid, which the Basques lost 3-1.

“I went to take the corner and I heard monkey sounds, the truth is that there have been few and there are stupid people everywhere,” Williams told the DAZN platform after the game at the Metropolitan stadium in Madrid.

“It’s okay, we have to keep working, I hope this changes little by little because we are fighting externally and internally against this,” added the youngest of the Williams brothers.

The Athletic winger scored his team’s goal shortly after receiving the insults and celebrated by pointing to his arm, showing his skin color.

“Yes, (the celebration was for that) with a little anger. It is not normal that they still insult you because of your skin color, but hey, nothing happens to continue working, focused on mine and that’s it,” Nico closed Williams.

“In our society and in football, people like this have no place and Atlético de Madrid, both the players and the fans, are in favor of Nico and against these situations,” Atlético captain Koke told DAZN.

The incident suffered by Nico Williams is added to a series of episodes that have shaken Spanish football in recent years, especially affecting Real Madrid forward Vinicius in recent times.

The Brazilian has become a symbol against racism after being the victim of insults in some stadiums.
