Metsavainio started this project in 2009. It’s a mosaic of 1.7 gig megapixels from Bima sakti consisting of 234 individual images sewn together. The resulting image captures the entire galaxy, speckled with about 20 million of the Milky Way’s estimated 200 billion stars.

The question is, how could one picture take 12 years? In his blog, Metsavainio points out the size of the mosaic and the fact that the image is very deep. Another reason is that I have photographed most of the mosaic frames as individual compositions and published them as independent works of art.
Still in blog-nya, wrote Space.com, Metsavainio also included information about the different cameras and some of the more specific techniques he used to create these images.

Some celestial bodies in the Milky Way need more exposure than others, because some appear dimmer and harder to see. For example, one supernova remnant requires more than 60 hours of exposure, he explained on the blog.
While the overall image is stunning, because of the detail that Metsavainio can capture in this mosaic, there are plenty of “hidden gems” that you can find. These complete image fragments showcase the beauty of celestial bodies such as the California Nebula, Pelican Nebula, Witch’s Nebula and many more.
