LONDON – The Great Britain waives the introduction of the green pass. Boris Johnson’s government has announced that it has abandoned the idea of imposing a vaccine passport for discos, cinemas and sporting events: a measure that had been aired in recent months and that it should have come into effect at the end of September. However, the green pass would hardly have been approved by the British Parliament: a good chunk of Johnson’s own conservative party had sided against, defining the coercive and discriminatory measure; Fiercely opposed, for obvious ideological reasons, were the Liberal Democrats and so was the Labor leader Keir Starmer, who had branded the idea of a vaccine passport as contrary to the British spirit.

On the other hand, this a country where there are no identity cards, considered a serious attack on personal freedom, and where they do not ask you to identify yourself even at the polling station when you go to vote, because they consider it an unacceptable abuse. As one Conservative MP said, we are not the kind of country that asks people for documents: let alone the green pass … The government has explained the reverse with the fact that, according to scientists, the current vaccines already constitute an effective first line of defense against a possible winter wave of the coronavirus. AND Johnson appears determined not to reintroduce restrictions, after decreeing all free on 19 July: this week will even announce the end of the emergency legislation and therefore the government’s renunciation of the power to impose restrictions on economic activities, schools and universities as well as rallies and events. In short, never again a new lockdown.

Johnson seems comforted that the July bet, to reopen everything in the middle of the third wave of Covid, seems to have proved successful: the same government had admitted that it feared a leap in infections up to 100,000 per day and experts predicted 200,000 for August. None of this: the new cases have stabilized around 30,000, but above all there was no significant impact on hospitalizations and deaths, thanks to the vaccine dam. Now they are about to start the campaign for the third dose, with millions of people involved this fall, as well as planning the vaccination of children over 12, which was initially excluded. Fears remain for this winter, when Covid, which continues to circulate, could have a bad influence overlapping, with the result of putting in difficulty a health system that is often at the limit of its capacity. But in London they are definitely looking to the post-pandemic.
