More than half a million corona deaths in Latin America and the Caribbean – News Augsburg, Allgäu and Ulm

More than half a million deaths from the coronavirus have now been recorded in Latin America and the Caribbean. There were at least 500,800 corona deaths in the region, according to a count by the AFP news agency on Wednesday night. Latin America and the Caribbean are the second world region after Europe with more than 500,000 registered fatalities from the pandemic. In Europe, this mark had been exceeded twelve days earlier.

The states in Latin America with the highest numbers of recorded corona deaths are Brazil (around 192,000) and Mexico (around 120,000). The vaccination campaigns against the coronavirus have now started in four countries in this region of the world. These are Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica and Mexico. In Argentina the controversial Russian vaccine Sputnik V is used, in the other three countries the preparation of the Mainz company Biontech and its US partner Pfizer.

The world region with the third highest number of corona deaths are the USA and Canada. A total of more than 350,000 deaths were recorded there.
