People living with HIV are more susceptible to coronavirus infection, and they are less likely to seek medical help, a study by the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology has shown, the press service of Rospotrebnadzor said.

The department reported that the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor, together with the Coalition for Treatment Preparedness, with the support of UNAIDS, studied the spread of coronavirus infection among HIV-positive patients and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the provision of medical care for HIV infection. The survey covered 931 respondents from 68 regions of Russia, which included both people living with HIV and people with negative HIV status.

According to the study, the number of HIV-positive people with confirmed COVID-19 markers was 4 times higher than that of HIV-negative study participants. They were also twice as likely to be tested for coronavirus as compared to HIV-negative respondents and less often sought medical help, even with symptoms.

The press service emphasized that it is very important for people living with HIV to take increased precautions due to coronavirus – use masks, wash hands, if possible, avoid crowds of people, consult a doctor if symptoms of the disease occur.

According to the researchers, it is possible that HIV-positive people belong to a group of particularly vulnerable to coronavirus, in connection with which research should be carried out on the safety and effectiveness of vaccination in this group.

According to the latest information, since the beginning of the pandemic, 2,187,990 cases of coronavirus infection have been recorded in Russia, 1,685,492 have recovered, and 38,062 have died.
