Israel: Police shoot autistic Palestinians – Benjamin Netanyahu speaks of tragedy

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has described the shooting of an autistic Palestinian by Israeli police as a tragedy. The government is now awaiting the outcome of an investigation by the Department of Justice, Netanyahu said on Sunday. It is the first time that the Prime Minister has spoken out on the May 30 incident.

The Israeli police said they had shot an unarmed Palestinian in the old city of Jerusalem. Accordingly, he ignored several requests to stop. The autistic man was on the way to his school, accompanied by a teacher. He is said to have been in his early 30s.

Palestinians speak of a “war crime”

As the Israeli Army Radio reported after the incident, the police initially assumed that the man was holding a gun. As a result, they opened fire after a persecution on foot. It later became clear that the object was the man’s cell phone. Netanyahu said what happened to the man was a tragedy. He was believed to have been considered militant in a highly sensitive area.

Palestinians had condemned the killing as a “war crime”. The crime occurred on social media with the death of the Blacks compared to George Floyd in the United States, who died in a police operation in late May.

Palestinians want to establish an independent state in the West Bank conquered by Israel in 1967 and in the Gaza Strip, with East Jerusalem as the capital.

The new Israeli unitary government, led by Prime Minister Netanyahu, has announced that it will annex areas under occupation Want to push the West Bank forward. A corresponding strategy is to be presented on July 1.

Over the weekend thousands of people demonstrated in Tel Aviv against the plans. Many demonstrators waved Israeli and Palestinian flags.

The annexation would be the first step towards implementing the controversial one Middle East plan by US President Donald Trump. According to the US plan, the Palestinians should be given the opportunity to get their own state – but without the strategically and economically important Jordan Valley in the West Bank and without East Jerusalem as the capital.

While the United States has already approved the planned area connections, large sections of the international community see it as one Violation of international law and warned Israel about it.
