Is it true that short people are smarter?

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Done that some people Genes do not have an imposing height popularizes the hypothesis that intelligence belongs to those who are short. It’s right?

Quoted from various sources, legendary technocrat BJ Habibie is 162cm tall and physicist Albert Einstein is 170.8cm tall.

Research from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland has found a correlation between genes associated with height and those associated with intelligence.

In an article published in the magazine Behavioral geneticsthe research team describes how they studied the DNA of 6,815 unrelated people.

However, the results are contrary to many people’s assumptions. They found a direct correlation between height and intelligence: tall people tend to be smarter.

In this study, the researchers used data obtained from the Generation Scotland: Scottish Family Health Study, in which intelligence is measured through four basic parameters: mental reaction time, language ability, processing speed and memory capacity.

After analyzing the data, the team found what they described as a “significant genetic correlation” between IQ and height between taller and shorter people.

Quoted by Medical Xpressthe researchers say those who are shorter on average are slightly less intelligent than their taller counterparts.

It should be emphasized that the researchers did not call all short people less intelligent or all tall people more intelligent. On the contrary, they show average results over the entire population.

Also, another important thing to note is that the Family Health Study did not use standardized IQ tests to measure intelligence.

Furthermore, the research team says that 70 percent of the genetic differences found in IQ and height can be attributed to genetic factors. While the rest can be attributed to environmental factors.

Research in Scotland also cites various other height studies associated with health and mortality factors.

“Short stature is associated with the risk of cardiovascular (heart) disease and many other health outcomes. A higher IQ has been associated with a lower risk of death for a reduced risk of a number of health outcomes such as: coronary heart disease, stroke, accidents and suicide, “said the research team citing research by Calvin et al (2011), Deary et al (2010), and Whalley and Deary (2001).

Furthermore, “there is also a complex interplay” between height and intelligence and old age. “Cognitive changes from the age of 11 to 79 have been shown to predict a decrease in height between 79 and 87,” the study cited Starr et al. (2010).

Researchers in Scotland noted that previous studies relied heavily on individual testing.

‘The reason for the intelligence-health relationship is not fully understood. One of the few non-exclusive possibilities is that height and intelligence are both indicators of’ system integrity ‘, the researchers said.
