IRS Direct File Pilot for Filing Taxes in New York and Beyond

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is implementing a new tool for filing taxes in New Yorkwhich is different from the current IRS Free File program, which allows taxpayers whose income is less than $79,000 file their taxes for free.

The Direct File pilot is available to eligible taxpayers who reside in Arizona, California, Florida, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Nueva York, Nevada, Dakota del Sur, Tennessee, Texas, Washington y Wyoming and is undergoing final testing before rolling it out nationwide at a later date.

States with an income tax that indicated they had the capacity and resources available to develop a state tax filing solution, or already have one ready to integrate, are participating in the pilot, as are most States without state income taxes. Many states that will not participate this year have already indicated interest for possible future years.

For now, Direct File will only accept federal tax returns, but the IRS will redirect taxpayers to file with their state’s supported tool (if one exists) if they want to file a state return.

Direct File

Direct File is a new tax filing tool, different from the current IRS Free File program, which allows taxpayers whose income is less than $79,000 to file their taxes for free through participating brand-name software. Direct File is open to everyone, regardless of income.

Taxpayers with adjusted gross income (AGI) of $79,000 or less in 2023 qualify to use the free tool. New York State Tax Filing.

Requirements to use the tool:

· Active email account (allows you to track the status of your return).
· Copy of last year’s tax return or your federal adjusted gross income from the previous year.
· Driver’s license or a state-issued non-driver ID (for you and your spouse, if filing jointly).
· Dates of birth and Social Security numbers (for you, your spouse, and your dependents).
· Proof of income and taxes withheld is like IRS forms W-2, 1098, 1099.
· Balance of your tax account.
· Forms 1095-A, B or C, Affordable Care Statement.
· Information related to any income tax credits you are claiming.
· Bank account number and routing number.
· NY529 College Savings Account Information (if you are requesting a refund to be distributed).
