“Iran’s Foreign Ministry Congratulates Syria on Arab League Readmission”

The spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Nasser Kananí, “congratulated Syria’s success in regaining its place in the Arab League” and predicted that it will help stabilize the region.

“The resolution of disputes between Muslim countries, as well as the convergence and synergy between them, will generate favorable results for stability and collective peace,” Kananí said in a statement on Monday (05.08.2023).

The diplomat also called for “reducing foreign interference in regional affairs,” in an apparent allusion to the United States.

The Arab League lifted the suspension of Syria’s membership yesterday at an emergency meeting of foreign ministers in Cairo.

The decision implies that the Syrian government is now “a member like the rest of the countries” of the organization and “has the right to participate in all activities and events.”

The return of Syria to the body, however, is subject to compliance with a road map with the aim of solving “the crisis” unleashed after the protests against Al Assad and the consequent war that has plagued the country since 2011, according to the final resolution.

Iran is an ally of Syria and is a key supply route for oil derivatives and other supplies to the Arab country, subject to international sanctions that limit its commercial activities, and also maintains a strong armed presence on Syrian territory, where advisers are present. Iranian and pro-Iranian militias.

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi paid an official visit to Syria last week, the first visit by an Iranian leader since his Arab ally plunged into armed conflict nearly 12 years ago.

During his visit, Raisí advocated “regional cohesion” as a way to achieve “tranquility” in the Middle East and signed seven cooperation documents with his ally.
