TEHERANIran will provide a “calculated and resolute” response to the assassination of its top nuclear scientist; Mohsen Fakhrizadeh. This was conveyed by a top adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Kamal Kharrazi.

The remarks came as local hardline newspapers pressed for revenge by attacking the city of Haifa, a city where Israel is home to ammonium nitrate. (Read: Killed Nuclear Scientist, Iran Urged to Attack Israel’s Haifa)

“Undoubtedly, Iran will provide a calculated and resolute answer to the criminals who took the martyr of Mohsen Fakhrizadeh from the Iranian nation,” said Kharrazi, who also serves as the head of Iran’s Strategic Council on Foreign Relations, in a statement. Reuters, Monday (30/11/2020).

Fakhrizadeh, long suspected by Western and Israeli governments of being behind Iran’s secret nuclear weapons program, was ambushed on a highway near Tehran on Friday and shot dead in his car.

Iran’s clerics and military rulers blame arch-rivals Tehran; Israel, for the killing. Iran has in the past accused Israel of killing several Iranian nuclear scientists since 2010.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office declined to comment on the killing. An Israeli cabinet minister, Tzachi Hanegbi, said yesterday he did not know who did it. (Also read: Slipping, US President-Elect Joe Biden Has a Broken Leg)

On Sunday, the hardline Kayhan newspaper, whose editor-in-chief was appointed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, called for an attack on the Israeli port city of Haifa if Israel’s role in Fakhrizadeh’s killing was proven.

“The attack must be carried out in such a way that in addition to destroying facilities, it must also result in many casualties,” Saadollah Zarei wrote in an opinion piece in the newspaper.
