iPad Pro with Mini-LED screen to be unveiled in Q1 2021

The 12.9-inch iPad Pro equipped with a Mini-LED screen would be unveiled in the first quarter of next year. Apple is said to have diversified its supply chain to obtain Mini-LED screens from its supplier General Interface Solution.

A DigiTimes report claims that GIS has approved an investment of 62,500,000 euros to expand production of touch screens for Apple tablets.

Ming-Chi Kuo, a very famous analyst in the field already affirmed at the end of 2019 that Apple tablets would be equipped with a Mini-LED screen at the end of 2020 or the beginning of 2021. While we thought that this iPad would be released in 2020, it will have to wait until next year. It will be Apple’s first iPad equipped with a Mini-LED screen. However, this will not be Apple’s first product with this technology since Apple Pro Display XDR, its computer screen, is equipped with a Mini-LED screen.

Why the Mini-LED and not the OLED on the iPad Pro 2021?

A Mini-LED display is an LCD display with smaller LEDs, less than one millimeter. These are installed by zones and promise reduced energy consumption. The main difference from OLED is the fact that OLED panels do not have a backlight, as the pixels can generate their own light. Even if blacks will not be as convincing as with an OLED display, the contrast of Mini-LED screens is very well controlled. A Mini-LED screen is also much brighter than an OLED display can be.

Mini-LED technology provides excellent image quality compared to standard LED screens, and remains a more affordable technology than OLED. Moreover, Mini-LED screens are not subject to marking, one of the major problems of OLED screens. According to MacRumors, Apple would wait until 2022 before equipping its iPad Pro with an OLED panel.

The 2021 iPad Pro with a Mini-LED display could house Apple’s new processor, the A14 Bionic, already fitted to the iPhone 12 and the fourth generation iPad Air. It is also expected to retain the 12.9-inch size of its predecessor.. However, it is not known if Apple plans to reduce the size of the borders around the screen. In addition to the iPads, the American company could also present new models of MacBook Pro equipped with Mini-LED screens from 2021.
