Investigate Video of Group of People on Top of a Moving Subway in NYC – NBC New York (47)

A shocking new video posted on the TikTok app shows a group of people standing, walking and even dancing on top of a moving subway as it crosses the Williamsburg Bridge in New York City.

The group of eight people recorded the images of themselves in action. Police said the group was riding on top of a northbound J Line train Saturday night as it crossed the bridge.

The group appeared to be laughing and enjoying themselves as they rode on top of the train, but are now being sought by authorities in connection with what they describe as, and has been shown to be, a life-threatening act.

In the past, the police intensified the application of the law around this type of action after a series of incidents.

In 2015, three minors were arrested after riding in the back of an uptown express train. In 2019, a man with a history of subway crime was caught outside a 5 line train in Brooklyn.

More recently, a 32-year-old man died in October 2021 after falling off a J-line train, the same one the last people were filmed on. Hundreds of similar incidents are reported each year.

While the video is alarming, the travelers didn’t seem too surprised by the hack. They noted that recent violent crimes on the subway had them more concerned than a group of teenagers trying to make a video go viral by recording a stunt.

“The subways have been feeling very unsafe lately and that’s definitely more my concern than a couple of kids having fun,” said cyclist Tim Casentini. “What are you going to do, put rails on top of the subway? It’s not going to work.”

A police investigation into the latest case is ongoing.
