Intuitive Machines’ Lunar Lander Odysseus Sends First Images of Moon Despite Sideways Landing

Lunar lander Odysseus has sent its first images of the moon, reports the American company Intuitive Machines. Odysseus landed on the moon on Friday, but fell on its side. Still, we managed to send photos to Earth.

Odysseus survived the landing on Friday in one piece, but ended up in a crater. This caused the lunar lander to fall on its side. According to the company, the vehicle probably overturned during the final phase of the descent, after which it came to rest sideways against a boulder.

Despite its location on the side, the lunar lander still works and can therefore transmit images and signals. The images are from the southernmost point on the moon that a vehicle has ever reached.

The lunar lander sent two photos: one of the hexagonal spaceship’s descent and one 35 seconds after it fell. This exposed the pockmarked ground of the impact crater called Malapert A.

The landing of Odysseus is the first successful American moon landing since 1972. The lunar lander will conduct research for about a week into the effect of charged particles from the sun on the moon’s surface. This information will be used to see whether people can go to the moon again in the coming years.
