Islamabad: Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah wants Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan to be tried in a military court. After his arrest, Rana sought trial for his role in the violence that broke out across the country.
Rana Sanaullah said that Khan had planned the violence against military establishments during the countrywide protests that followed his arrest on May 9.
Rana told Dawn News that the plan he planned to target the military establishment was later implemented. Sanaullah added that he did everything and Khan was the mastermind behind it all.
“Evidence is on record. All this was planned before Khan went to jail. Who will do it, where and what will be done are all planned in advance. What strategy should be used when arrested? All this was decided,’ said Sanaullah.
At least eight people were killed and 290 injured in clashes between police and protesters as Khan was produced in an Islamabad court.
Protesters also attacked military installations, including the Corps Commander’s residence in Lahore and the Army General Headquarters in Rawalpindi. The government and the army have announced that action will be taken against the culprits.
Meanwhile, Defense Minister Khawaja Asif said no decision has been taken on prosecuting Khan under the Army Act. He added that such possibilities cannot be ruled out.
Imran Khan was arrested by the police on May 9 in connection with corruption allegations. After this, people protested in the streets, set fire to the building and clashed with the police. Khan was released from three days of custody after the Supreme Court declared his arrest illegal. Officials arrested thousands of Tehreek-e-Insaf party workers who protested after Imran Khan’s arrest.
