Inspectorate SZW warns against rogue emails with an Excel attachment

The Social Affairs and Employment Inspectorate (SZW) warns internet users of rogue emails sent on behalf of the organization that contain an Excel attachment with malicious macro. The email has the subject “Second Notification – Investigation Has Started” and states that further action will be taken against the recipient’s company starting next month.

The reason is a complaint about a company concerning a “violation of labor law during a crisis period.” Subsequently, possible sanctions that the company may face, such as a complaint to the public prosecutor and a possible civil lawsuit, are mentioned. “The complaint and investigation details are attached to this post. Please read the attached documents and respond accordingly. We have included the edited complaints and the exact allegations,” the email said. The attackers use different complaint numbers, times and notification numbers in the email.

The Inspectorate SZW warns through its own website in Twitter for the rogue email. “Please note! There are phishing emails from the ‘Inspectorate SZW’ circulating. Do not open! View the examples on this page. Did you accidentally open the file? Have your computer checked for malware,” the advice said. The Excel attachment contains a malicious macro, which when installed by the user installs malware on the computer. At the time of writing, the Excel file was run by eight of the sixty virus scanners VirusTotal recognized.
