Injured Employee Returns Home After Drama at Balkbrug Psychiatric Clinic | inland

The DJI, the agency of the Ministry of Justice and Security, does not want to comment further on the severity of the injuries another employee stabbed. “There is intense contact with this employee,” the spokesperson just wants to say. Clinic director Hanny van Geffen said yesterday that the two stabbed employees were not in danger of life.

According to Van Geffen, the author, who remained in an open residential group, knocked on the door of the office where the three employees were around one in the evening. After the door was opened, he forcibly entered and started stabbing the staff members. One of them sustained fatal injuries. “Attempts have been made to resuscitate the employee, but without success,” the director said.

After the stabbing, the patient locked himself in another room e tried to start the fire. He then committed suicide with the knife he used to attack employees. How the accident could have happened is still under investigation. But according to Van Geffen, the attack was a complete surprise. Many staff and patients witnessed the incident.

He did not want to say anything about the identity of the perpetrator and the attacked employees. The clinic, officially called the Center for Transcultural Psychiatry, houses, among other things, inmates with a psychiatric disorder. Many of them have a non-Dutch cultural background.

The service also says it will not take any further steps at the clinic after the stabbing. “We are still awaiting the investigation. The focus is now on after-sales service and on assisting employees and patients. The goal is not to draw conclusions and what should be done following the stabbing, “said the DJI spokesperson.

The FNV union announced on Sunday that it has many questions about the stabbing. According to the director of the FNV Yntse Koenen (Government), the accident does not come only as a result shock to employees of the Overijssel clinic itself, but for all employees of prisons and other judicial institutions. The union leader wants ‘the bottom stone up’.

The FNV raises the question, among other things, of how the detainee can access the staff room. It is also important to know if the staff team was in order. For example, the union wonders if there was enough staff and if it was a “stable team that is in tune with each other,” according to Koenen.

Wouter Boogaard, director of DJI’s Forensic Care and Juvenile Institutions division, also reacted in shock after the “sad event”. Legal Protection Minister Franc Weerwind expressed his condolences on Twitter. Mayor Maarten Offinga of the municipality of Hardenberg did the same.

In 2019 he was already shot in the same clinic. A detainee in immigration detention then assaulted an employee with a self-made stabbing weapon. The inmate tried to strangle an employee and stabbed her in the chest, after which he bit a colleague who knew he had syphilis.

Less than a year later, another stabbing occurred. One patient then stabbed a sociotherapist out of the blue.

Two of the clinic’s best-known incidents occurred in 2017, when a patient stabbed her sociotherapist in the face with a fragment of a cup in May. It left a permanent scar. The most dramatic incident was in August 2017, when a patient threw a pot full of boiling water at his therapist’s face. He suffered severe burns to his head, chest and legs.

Veldzicht was founded in 1894 as a state educational institution for boys. The institute has become a major employer. for the village of Balkbrug. Officials and other workers came to the village, houses were built.

In 1933 Veldzicht became a TBS clinic, which it remained until 2013. Criminals convicted with a TBS measure were treated behind the thick walls. It is now a transmural psychiatry center, specializing in the treatment of psychiatric patients of non-Dutch descent. A psychiatric hospital where asylum seekers, illegal refugees awaiting deportation and patients with TBS who have been declared undesirable foreigners are treated.
