Influenza Vaccine and HPV Vaccine Compensation for Certain Categories of People in Romania

The influenza vaccine and the HPV vaccine will be compensated in Romania for certain categories of people starting this fall, announced the Minister of Health, Alexandru Rafila.

The flu vaccination campaign will start this year with a first: differentiated compensation for vaccines, says the Minister of Health.

From autumn, the flu vaccine and the HPV vaccine will be compensated in Romania for certain categories of people, announced Prof. Dr. Alexandru Rafila, Minister of Health, present at the Parliament Palace at the conference organized by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Romanian Association for Pediatric Education in Family Medicine (AREPMF), under the patronage of the Ministry of Health, having as its main theme the promotion of universal access to immunization.

“Certainly this year we will start the flu vaccination campaign through differentiated compensation according to the risk categories, those who currently benefit from the vaccine from the Ministry of Health program, that is, elderly people with chronic diseases, pregnant women will be able to get the fully compensated vaccine and we are also trying to do the same for the HPV vaccine, a vaccine that is more and more in demand lately, and we would be happy if women starting at the age of 18 also have at least partially compensated for this vaccine” , said prof. dr. Alexandru Rafila, Minister of Health, according to 360medical.ro.

The recommendation of the National Vaccinology Committee is that women can be vaccinated against HPV until the age of 45.

“We want in the second step to fully compensate all the vaccines that patients with chronic diseases benefit from, because they have to make a serious financial effort at the moment and we want to protect them as best as possible. There are patients with chronic diseases who benefit from pneumococcal vaccination, or we are even discussing adults who should periodically administer the diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis vaccine”, explained Prof. Dr. Alexandru Rafila.

Vaccine compensation, a first for Romania

The Minister of Health said that the vaccine compensation mechanism is a first for Romania, it needs to be easily tested, maybe corrected, because there will certainly be imperfections at the beginning.

“I don’t want to make promises, but the flu vaccine will be compensated and certainly other categories of vaccines, even if the compensation will not be full. The fact that we provide a certain level of compensation is encouraging, I think, for each of our fellow citizens to get vaccinated. We want to have the best possible accessibility to vaccination!”, said Prof. Dr. Rafila, who believes that this will also contribute to improving the perception of vaccination, which was somewhat affected during the pandemic.

As early as 3 years ago, the Coalition of Organizations of Patients with Chronic Diseases in Romania drew the attention of the health authorities that chronically ill patients need compensated vaccines.

The compensation will be made by the National Health Insurance House (CNAS).

“We need to build a list for vaccines, a list dedicated to these types of products, which have not been compensated before. You will see that over time, expenses for patients with chronic diseases, for example, could be reduced by the fact that they are protected against infectious complications”, explained Prof. Dr. Alexander Rafila.

The Minister of Health also assured that the products offered by manufacturers in Romania are safe and effective.
