“Indonesian Ministry of Health warns of diseases caused by mosquito bites amid increasing temperatures”

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Indonesian Ministry of Health appealed to the public to be aware of a number of diseases caused by mosquito bites amid the currently increasing air temperature in Indonesia.

“There is a study on dengue fever mosquitoes, with the current increase in the earth’s temperature, the hotter the temperature, the more actively it bites it. It could be because it is thirsty,” said the Director of Infectious Disease Prevention and Control of the Indonesian Ministry of Health, Imran Pambudi, in a press conference for Commemoration of Malaria Day. Worldwide 2023 which is followed in the network in Jakarta, Tuesday.

Similar conditions also apply to female malaria mosquitoes (Anopheles), which generally appear from 18.00 to 06.00.

According to Imran, there are five types of malaria that have the potential to trigger complications that can lead to death if medical treatment is late.

First is the type of falciparum malaria. Caused by Plasmodium falciparum which can develop into malaria with complications that can cause death.

The third is malaria ovale which is caused by plasmodium ovale. The clinical manifestations of that type are mild.

Fourth is malaria malariae Caused by plasmodium malariae which also has mild symptoms.

Fifth, knowlesi malaria is caused by plasmodium knowles which can develop into malaria with complications.

Common symptoms that appear are fever, chills accompanied by vomiting, headaches, muscle aches, aches and pains, said Imran.

“People who have suffered from malaria, aches to the point of headaches, usually see the person’s shadow and sideways, that’s because it’s so dangerous,” he said.

If malaria attacks pregnant women, said Imran, it can cause anemia so that the baby in the womb is deprived of oxygen. This situation has the potential to cause small babies weighing under 2 kg.

“This condition is vulnerable to newborn death,” he said.

Malaria is an infectious disease caused by the plasmodium parasite that lives and reproduces in human red blood cells through the bites of female malaria mosquitoes (Anopheles).

According to Imran, malaria can attack everyone, including men or women and in all age groups, infants, children or adults.

“Another characteristic, if he bites it is in a nungging position. Generally in swamps, lagoons, river estuaries and others,” he said.

Efforts to control malaria that can be done by the community include cleaning the environment, clearing waterways so they don’t stagnate, draining stagnant water, cleaning moss in springs and lakes.

In addition, malaria can also be anticipated by reducing the mosquito population by spreading larvae-eating fish seeds, such as tinhead fish, red tilapia, guppies, tilapia and others in lagoons, rivers, ponds and other stagnant water.

“We can also spread larvacide/larvae poison, plant mosquito-repellent plants such as kecombrang, lemon grass, zodia, lavender, marigold,” he said.

Avoiding malaria mosquito bites can be done by sleeping using mosquito nets, using mosquito repellents, installing wire mesh in the wind/ventilation of the house, keeping livestock cages away from the house, using topical mosquito repellents (repellent).

“When going out at night it is recommended to wear clothes that can cover the body such as long pants, long-sleeved shirts, sarongs and others,” he said.
