Indonesian Foreign Minister Meets Taliban Representatives in Qatar, Demands Respect for Women’s Rights

The Minister of Foreign Affairs (Menlu) of the Republic of Indonesia, Retno Marsudi, visited the office Taliban of Doha, Qatar. During his visit, he met with Taliban representatives.

“On the sidelines of my visit to Qatar, I also met with representatives of the Taliban Political Office in Doha,” Retno wrote on her Twitter account @Menlu_RI, Friday (27/8/2021).

Retno and representatives of the Taliban discussed a number of points. One of them is related to women’s rights.

“I conveyed to the Taliban the importance of: inclusive government in Afghanistan, respecting women’s rights, ensuring Afghanistan does not become a breeding ground for terrorist organizations and activities,” Retno wrote.

On the same occasion, Retno also met with the US special representative for Afghanistan, Zalmay Khalilzad. Retno discussed the process of evacuating people in Afghanistan.

“We discussed, among other things, issues related to evacuation, security and the future of Afghanistan,” wrote Retno.

He also met with the Deputy Prime Minister of Qatar as well as the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Qatar, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani. The two discussed many issues, including Afghanistan.

“We discussed many issues related to the future of Afghanistan. I reiterated the importance of inclusive governance; respecting women’s rights; and ensuring Afghanistan does not become a breeding ground for terrorist organizations and activities,” explained Retno.
