Indonesia Number Three Most Leprosy Cases in the World, Know the Way of Transmission

Data from the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2021 noted, Indonesia become the third country after India and Brazil.

In the webinar on Friday (25/6/2022), as reported by Kompas.com, there are six provinces that have not yet reached elimination leprosy of a total of 34 provinces.

Christina explained, elimination leprosy interpreted as a morbidity rate of less than 1 per 10,000 population, which is considered no longer a public health problem.

The six provinces include North Sulawesi, Gorontalo, Maluku, North Maluku, Papua and West Papua.

In addition, there are 92 regencies/cities that have not yet achieved elimination in 17 provinces.

He said that the new case leprosy from Indonesia in 2021 it will reach 10,976 patients, 12,230 registered cases, and the level 2 disability rate will reach 2.47 per 1,000,000 population.

“The proportion of new cases without defects is 83 percent, so there are still patients leprosy about 17 percent were found to be disabled. The proportion of new cases of children is also more than 10 percent, meaning that transmission in the community is still high, it should be less than 5 percent. So still children have been infected leprosy,” explained Christina.
